Too much love had worn the timber
down and rubbed off the paint, but a
caring restoration effort has ensured
future generations will enjoy the play
set for years to come.
Daniel O Toole, who has children
of his own, took part in the restoration
project with other shed members.
He remembers playing on the
wooden train as a child.
"I was only three or four years old.
That was back in 1979-80. When I saw
it [the train] on the Men s Shed
website I recognised it. I called my
mum and asked her if I d played on it,
Mr O Toole said.
Almost 35 years later he was
helping apply the finishing touches to
his childhood memory.
"It has been a bizarre sort of full-
circle experience, he said.
"It has been really good.

"It has been a good team building
exercise, Mr Cooper said.
"When we tried to put it all back
together it was a comedy of errors. But
just the banter between the men, they
were laughing and joking with each
other, was just great.
He said the play equipment would
go back to its Belconnen Mall location
for the kids to play on.
BCS manager of children s
programs Allison Sullings said before
the play equipment was restored the
timber was splitting, bolts were
sticking out and the paint was coming
"Now it is amazing, she said. "I

The North Canberra Community
Council has had a busy month.
Social housing, Dickson Shops
redevelopment discussions and
support for Friends of Mount Majura
were just some of council s activities.
It also facilitated deliberation for a
Capital Metro forum that brought
together stakeholders on the project.
The council lodged a submission
on the proposed construction of an
urban village on Parkes Block 6
Section 3. It also lodged a
submission in response to the Coles/
Doma proposal to pave and convert
what is currently a landscaped block
on the corner of Cowper and Antill
streets to car parking.
Later this month the council
representatives will appear at a
public hearing for the Inquiry into

Regarding the Braddon Club site,
the ACT Civil and Administrative
Tribunal found there were no reasons
to refuse the deconcessionalisation
of the land s Crown lease. While we
were disappointed with this decision,
we are pleased that the tribunal had
found earlier that the council had
appropriate legal standing in relation
to the case.
The next NCCC public meeting
will be on Wednesday, August 20,
7.30pm at ACT Sports House, 100
Maitland Street, Hackett.
