For more than five years, Ms

not only patients receiving care, but
the nursing staff as well.

There are some patients who can't
feed themselves, so I assist to feed
them," Ms Hodgson said.
One of the challenges with Meal
Mates is if I can't quite sit the patient
up, I need to wait for the nurses and
that can take patience because they're
always quite busy in the mornings."
Every Monday morning, Ms
Hodgson helps out with the breakfast
round for up to 10 ward patients at the
Bruce hospital, the first of her busy
week of volunteer engagements.
With a certificate III in aged care,
and home and community care from
her former career, Ms Hodgson says
she is passionate about helping the
general Canberra community, but
particularly the ageing population.
"I also volunteer with Kangara

serving breakfast to the homeless,"
"I started off doing childcare, but I

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT
Pedal Power executive director
1My bike and its environs. I can't
believe how blessed we are to have
the bush right at our doorstep! Within
five minutes from my home I can be
riding the Bruce Ridge -- join onto
the Centenary Trail on Black
Mountain and spend more than an
hour on the bike without seeing a

2The opportunity. Canberra
presents opportunity in so many
facets -- choice for work and career;
diversity to study and expand your
mind; to express yourself in your
chosen field; to pursue your interests
without the limitations that bigger
cities or smaller towns place
3The people. I love the fact that
Canberra is so close that you know
someone who knows someone . . .
Canberra provides the right mix that
allows great friendly support across a
diversity of lifestyles and, in
particular, that the sporting
community works so well together.
