It s hard to believe that when chef
and H2O Restaurant owner Rukman
Kahatapitiya came to Australia he
started with no qualifications as a
kitchen hand washing dishes in the
bustling kitchen of a local hotel
"It was really hard to find a job and
the only thing I could do was be a
kitchen hand at the time," he
"When I got a job to wash dishes
at Rydges Capital Hill more
opportunity came up. They told me
You can just wash and so I did it
very quickly, and then next day they
gave me a chef jacket!"
Mr Kahatapitiya said that was the
moment when he knew he wanted to
become a chef, and with his new-
found inspiration he enrolled and
completed a culinary qualification at
CIT while obtaining work experience
in various kitchens across the city.
"I was then moved up to second in
charge as sous chef and looked after
a lot of functions," he said.
"When John Howard was prime
minister I did a lot of functions for
him, and also hosted the Sri Lankan
cricket team in 2012, Julia Gillard,
and foreign ministers."
In 2006 Mr Kahatapitiya and his
wife opened H2O Restaurant in the
Belconnen Soccer Club, where he
was able to further develop his
passion in cooking. The restaurant
has recently relocated to the
Statesman Hotel in Curtin.
"We are so happy to have H2O
here. It s been a very welcome
change for us," Statesman Hotel
manager Michelle Hood said.
"This is a meeting place for
Ms Hood said Mr Kahatapitiya
and his wife s service has been so
good in the past that loyal customers
and clientele have followed them to
the new premises.
"Mr Kahatapitiya is a yes man, it s
never a No but always How can I
make it better? and that is why H2O
has food to please every kind of taste
and budget," she said.
The restaurant offers a mix of
everything from Sri Lankan cuisine,
Thai curries and Mexican
chimichangas to the much-loved
Aussie reef and beef.
"We have a lot of variety and
choice on the menu," Mr
Kahatapitiya said. "People may not
know this but we are also open for
breakfast as well as lunch and dinner,
and we can hold birthday parties and
business conferences," Ms Hood
"We re not just exclusive to our
hotel guests, we can accommodate
all types of people. Anyone can come
in and enjoy the dining experience
"You walk in here and you re
welcomed and cared for."
