$300,000 to fix flying fox just too much
Lachlan Geerdink, 11, of Gordon, is disappointed by vandalism at the Point Hut park.

Children and youth in Gordon will
lose the suburb s popular flying fox
because recurring vandalism has led to
a decision that the equipment is too
expensive to fix.
Replacing the ruined underfelt
could cost the government hundreds of
thousands of dollars.
Vandals have continually attacked
the Point Hut Park double flying fox
over the past five years.
Territory and Municipal Services
have repaired the softfall beneath the
equipment about 10 times in that
period at a cost of about $58,500, with

"[However] it is expected the cost to
upgrade the flying fox would be in the
order of $100,000 based on costs to
upgrade the Yerrabi Pond District Park

Consultation would be undertaken
before any new equipment was

playspace strategy currently in the
Gordon Neighbourhood Watch area
co-ordinator Mark Lynch said the
community would rather see the flying
fox remain and more done to

children if it closed permanently.

The problems at the lakeside park
were on-going, including explosives
used to blow up a toilet block a few
years ago and damage to the park s
large slide, fixed about 18 months ago.
Mr Lynch said the flying fox had
been fenced off for several months due
to safety concerns.
Gordon 11-year-old Lachlan
Geerdink said he used the flying fox,
his favourite thing at the park, about
once a fortnight before it was closed.
"[I m] pretty frustrated just because
people wreck it and ruin other people s
fun. It s not right.
TIME TO FOCUS ON
Brain Injury Awareness Week is
under way in Canberra. Acquired
brain injury is a very common injury
caused by a traumatic event. This is
caused by an external force to the
brain such as a motor vehicle
accident, a fall or a blow to the head.
With your help we want to show the
community how to send a message of
support to all those adults and
children living with a brain injury.
More than 1.6 million Australians
live with acquired brain injuries.
Brain Injury Awareness Week runs
from August 11-17.
TO BLOOMING SPECTACLE
The countdown until Floriade 2014 is
officially on with Commonwealth
Park to undergo a few finishing
touches ahead of the grand unveiling
on September 13. A fence was
erected on Monday around the park
to protect the event s garden beds
throughout the festival. Alternative
access arrangements for pedestrians
around the park and temporary traffic
changes on Commonwealth Avenue
will continue until October 27. These
traffic lights are activated every year
to allow pedestrians who normally
park in the Regatta Place car park to
cross Commonwealth Avenue from
the Acton car park.
