Lonely lives and quiet deaths
Eddie Marsan as John May in the film Still Life.
The big screen
John May (Eddie Marsden) is a
nondescript council employee in a
mundane job that he treats seriously
and does extremely well. He ensures
that people who have died alone in
council flats without any family are
given a decent funeral service.
We only know these people
through the photos, bills and letters
they leave behind.
John is as routine in his private life
as he is at work. He goes home to his
council flat, eats his dinner of tinned
tuna, toast and an apple peeled in one
John is like an automaton, although
one with a big heart.
Due to cutbacks, John learns the
deceased case he is working on, John
Stokes, will be his final case. John
May is being let go''.
He is determined that John Stokes
will not farewell this life without
family and friends. May's meeting
with Stokes' daughter, Kelly, shows
him that life can have golden
As the film progresses we see the
care and devotion with which John
approaches his job and the respect he
shows to each deceased person.
We see a moving picture equivalent
of a still life portrait of John May.
The main difference between John
and his clients is that he is alive and
breathing. Otherwise he is just as
lonely. John realises he, too, will die
alone and be buried without anyone
The way the cinematographer
frames the images, including his tuna
dinner, captures the calmness with
which John goes about his work. The
serene way in which the film proceeds
is like a respectful silence at a funeral.
Still Life is both a respectful and
cruel film. It gradually leads the
audience to a state of elation then, in
an instance, slams us into a concrete
wall. You will be stunned.
Space adventurer Peter Quill (Chris
Pratt) finds himself the object of a
bounty hunt after stealing an orb
coveted by a treacherous villain, but
when Quill discovers the power it
holds, he must find a way to rally the
quartet of ragtag rivals hot on his trail
to save the universe.
