art stirs memory
Aged care and fine arts have
combined to provide art therapy tours
for Alzheimer's sufferers.
Goodwin Aged Care Service's
Montessori program has partnered
with the National Gallery of
Australia for a series of art therapy
tours. Residents at Goodwin House,
Ainslie, began their tours of the
National Gallery last week.
Goodwin chief executive Sue Levy
said people living with dementia
often become isolated.
"Discussion-based tours of art
allows participants to demonstrate
knowledge, engage in interpretation,
express emotions and recall
memories,'' Ms Levy said.
Goodwin's Memory Support Unit,
at Ainslie, is one of few in Australia
adapting the Montessori approach to
dementia care. Montessori therapy
and rehabilitation is historically used
in childhood education. In 2012,
Goodwin adapted the program.
The Art and Alzheimer's
program provides people living with
dementia with an opportunity to
connect with the world in enriching
ways,'' Ms Levy said.
