FILM REVIEW: SNOOPY AND CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE
Delightful slice of nostaglia

The Peanuts Movie will evoke a sense
of nostalgia for people who remember
the characters and situations from
Charles Schulz s comic strip Peanuts.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy,
Schroeder, Pigpen, Peppermint Patty
and the entire gang from the comic
strip make an appearance.
It is like the producers have taken a
collection of Peanuts cartoons and
strung them together into one
It all works.
The central concern is Charlie
Brown s continuing struggle to find a
positive self-image. Charlie also wants
desperately to talk to the Little Red
Headed Girl who has just moved into
the house across the street. He s in
The film centres on the children.
Adults are never seen and only heard
as the sound of a trombone when they
speak. Although this is a child s world,
the worries exhibited by Charlie
Brown and worldly-wise advice
dispensed by Lucy also outline real
world adult concerns.
Among Charlie Brown s struggle
with his own inadequacy, we get his
best friend Snoopy the dog s
escapades as his alter ego, the World
War 1 Flying Ace, and his pursuit of
Baron Von Richthofen in an attempt to
save the glamorous poodle, Fifi.
Those of us who remember Peanuts
fondly will be delighted by the
movie s respect for and adherence to
the original comic strip s tone and
For everyone else, it will be a
delightful escapade as Charlie Brown
learns that, despite his feelings of
inadequacy, his actions and perceived
failures really show that at his core he
is a good person.
The Peanuts Movie reminds me of
Paul McCartney s response to people
who said he only wrote silly love
songs. He replied with a song titled
Silly Love Songs in which he sang,
"What s wrong with that?"
Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The
Peanuts Movie is lovely and a delight.
