Bluegrass passion strikes right note
Mustered Courage will be part of the line-up for the National Folk Festival 2015
Combining blistering banjo, affecting
melodies and keen humour, Mustered
Courage s new album, White Lies and
Melodies, is a fantastic example of
modern Australian bluegrass.
The album has been nominated for
Best Country Album at the upcoming
2015 ARIA Awards.
"It s awesome to get such a big
accolade in the national scene,"
guitarist Julian Abrahams, originally
from Canberra, said.
"We re really humbled with the
nomination and it definitely feels like
a nice piece of affirmation to be
recognised with that award."
Recorded at Sing Sing Recording
Studios in Melbourne with producer
Forseter Savell, White Lies and
Melodies demonstrates the depth and
diversity of contemporary bluegrass.
"The whole record is quite eclectic,"
"If you listen to a lot of bluegrass
records you know that a lot of the
songs tend to sound the same; similar
chords, similar melodies.
Abrahams favourite track and the
album opener, Leave This Life Behind,
features a contribution from Grammy
nominated bluegrass musician Jim
VanCleve, considered one of the best
fiddle players in the world.
They worked with VanCleve on
their cover of Circle of Life from
tribute album, We Love Disney.
"I just threw out VanCleve s name"
Abraham says. "You know, Let s just
go for the best guy in the world ! We
just dropped him an email and he got
back to us straight away and he said,
I d love to. We were like, Whoa !"
Abrahams cut his teeth in the 90s
playing in punk/ska band All Systems
Go and hip-hop/soul band Casual
An avid jazz fan, he met future
Mustered Courage front man Nick
Keeling (banjo -- originally from
Texas) while enrolled at the Canberra
School of Music.
After he relocated to Melbourne,
Abrahams and Keeling started
Mustered Courage in 2010 as a way to
indulge their love of American
bluegrass and roots music.
After a debut US tour in 2014 and
another 10-week USs tour earlier this
year, including appearing at the
prestigious Telluride Bluegrass
Festival, the band is finally starting to
crack the US market.
"The latest tour saw such a dramatic
increase in numbers and the calibre of
the shows. It was really easy to feel the
trajectory was heading in the right
direction and quite rapidly as well,"
ALBUM: ZIPPER DOWN / ARTIST EAGLES OF DEATH METAL
Irreverent approach to life, and rock, shines through
Talk about cool, brainless fun.
Eagles of Death Metal is a fun rock

Here we find turbo-charged rock
songs filled with grunge, sexy lyrics,
dirt blues and a slickly styled swagger.
There s even a cover of Duran Duran s
Say A Prayer which thankfully sounds
nothing like the original.
Vocalist Jesse Hughes and Queen s
of The Stone Age s Josh Homme have
been making this sort of music for a
while - their zingy guitar lines and
erotically-charged songs come across
as humorous, fierce, full-on, un-
tempered .... you get the drift.
Four albums -- these guys make it all
sound as easy as ever like they ve
jammed all the non-serious bands of
the last 40 years into their latest release
so you can just go along for the ride.
Oh yeah the songs have names like
Silverlake and Skin-Tight Boogie but
names are really irrelevant here as it s
best just to loosen your shirt, kick your
shoes off and be entertained by a
couple of deviant lads in the mood to
