FILM REVIEW: SAN ANDREAS
Rocky road to reconciling
Dwayne ''The Rock'' Johnson stars in San Andreas as heroic rescue pilot Ray.
The big screen
The title leaves nothing to the
imagination about what this movie
will unleash on the audience.
There will be earthquakes,
tsunamis, and crumbling buildings
and, of course, San Francisco and Los
Angeles will yet again be turned to
rubble for the sake of our
Rescue helicopter pilot Ray is called
to action when the San Andreas fault
begins to shimmy and shake.
His mission is to rescue estranged
wife Emma, and daughter Blake, who
are trapped in LA and San Francisco
respectively, when the monster of all
quakes shakes the cities' foundations.
Family comes first for Ray. Other
victims are left to fend for themselves.
That's the nucleus of the movie.
The real heroes, however, are the
special effects team that orchestrated
the mass destruction that detonates on
Buildings are pulverised. The earth
is wrenched apart.
There are faults in this film, notably
the clunky script.
It has gaping holes as big as the San
Andreas fissure. So many characters
scream "Oh my god" that it makes you
feel like screaming OMG.
Everything about the film is
conventional and predictable from
the effects to the dialogue and the
mind-numbing ending with the
stereotypical unfurling of the US flag
and a promise to rebuild.
Although San Andreas is being
billed as a disaster film, it is an
extended metaphor for the
disintegration, and ultimate
reconciliation, of Ray and Emma's
marriage. The natural eruptions mirror
the emotional upheaval that these
characters are experiencing.
San Andreas is recommended for an
evening of natural tremors and
It is a celebration of special effects
and copies a raft of previous disaster
films but using the most up-to-date
effects technology available.
Although it has its faults, San
Andreas sits comfortably in the realm
of disaster films.
McInerney hopes to engage community
Belconnen Arts Centre has appointed a
new creative director with a vision to
expand the spectrum of arts
experiences in the community.
After more than two decades

cultural development sector, Monika
McInerney has taken on the top job
I feel like I have landed in a
banquet of opportunity,'' she said.
Her vision for the centre is to further
the level of support available to
emerging artists to progress in their
McInerney said she would also to
reach further with programming to
ensure art newcomers were enticed
and felt able to get involved.
This space is not just a space for
people with a high understanding of
arts practice," she said.
"We also want to ensure the
ordinary person finds an avenue here
to experiment, explore and develop
their own concepts."
The mother-of-three said she and
her family were using the winter
school holidays to shift up to Canberra
from the NSW south coast.
She said while there was a lot more
to figure out in her new role, she
wouldn't depart from her passion for
programming that engaged all ages
"Next year we have a lot of themes
about Belconnen and Belconnen's
50th celebration," she said.
"We will work with the community
to hear their stories and provide this as
a space to show and engage with them.
