AN EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURER TOUR
VALE FRANK BROWN
Award recognises civic passion
Frank Brown was a founding
member of the Canberra Kambah
Lions Club and a tireless
community contributor for
Frank died on May 5, aged 74,
after battling motor neuron disease,
while the club was working on
creating an annual community
award in his name.
Weston Creek Community
Council chairman and long-time
Lion Tom Anderson said while he
and many others were mourning the
loss of a great bloke, the annual
award meant Mr Brown's life-time
of contributions would never be
The memorial award ceremony
was a celebratory event but there's
certainly a sadness on our part that
we couldn't get it ready in time for
him to be there,'' he said.
Because he had motor neuron
disease, we felt we didn't have the
time to run him through the
Australian honour system.
As a group we wanted to create
something that recognised what he
had done, not only for Lions but for
the broader community.''
Glenys Patulny was named the
inaugural winner of the Lion Frank
Brown memorial award for
community service to the
Tuggeranong Valley at a ceremony
It was a day of mixed emotions
but Mr Anderson said it was fitting
the first recipient was someone with
equal civic passion.
Glenys is dedicated and has her
hands in everything just like Frank
Ms Patulny is on the Chisholm
School board, the ACT
Conservation Council, convener of
the Tuggeranong Lake Carers
group, acting president of the
Tuggeranong Community Council
and an ACT Landcare
She met Mr Brown during his
time as the Lions Youth Haven
board chairman and said she would
never forget his drive to get things
It's such an honour to receive
this,'' Ms Patulny said.
He'd done a lot, he was such a
strong passionate individual who is
going to be sorely missed.''
Mr Anderson said he could
picture the grin his old friend would
have had if he had been at the
We talked to him about it
beforehand and he was chuffed and
happy the club had thought this
much to do it for him,'' he said.
If he was here I know he'd be
saying a lot of it is unsung work'
with a big smile on his face.''
