FILM REVIEW: CHAPPIE
Little new, it's sci-fi for humans
Sigourney Weaver in a scene from the film Chappie.

THE innocent sounding title,
Chappie, sounds warm and friendly
like calling someone matey, chum or
However, Chappie hides a
disturbing heart in a movie about a
robot that attains consciousness.
Set in Johannesburg, a force of
robot police, Scouts, work alongside
their human counterparts to bring law
and order to the city.
Deon is their maker, which recalls
Dr. Frankenstein s god-like
pronouncement, "It s alive."
Scout 22 suffers irreparable
damage in a street skirmish which
makes it the perfect subject for
Deon s attempt to program a robot
Sadly, the gangsters Ninja and
Yolandi highjack Deon and Scout22,
aka Chappie, in order to turn Chappie
into a number one street gangster who
can help them pull off a heist worth
hundreds of millions of dollars.
The human characters, especially
the vicious criminals Ninja and
Hippo, appear, initially, to be the
dregs of humanity. Violence is their
mode of communication and the
violence is visceral. During the
course of the film, we sympathise
more with these dregs than the human
characters such as Vincent, an
engineer who tries to promote his own
creation, a monster droid called
Moose, and Michelle Bradley, the
ineffectual CEO of Transvaal
It is yet another case of mega
corporations putting profits ahead of
the well-being of humanity.
Director Blomkamp s achievement
is to make us respond to Chappie, a
collection of microprocessors and
wires, as if he is human.
Like human beings, Chappie is
References to films such as
Bladerunner, I, Robot, District 9 and
Robocop are blatant.
The film is not original but offers
fresh twists on ideas of autonomous,
feeling machines overlaid with heavy
doses of violent action.
You don t have to be a fan of sci-
fi to appreciate the issues explored in
Chappie. You only have to be human.

The 2015 Canberra Harvest Festival
this Saturday will have more growers
and more great live music than ever.
The Canberra Environment Centre
will host free sustainability
workshops, a bounty of local produce
and products, and a bar stocked with
locally created wines and beers.
Environment Centre director Ryan
Lungu said this year s festival would
be bigger in every way and that they
were expecting over 1000 people
We have even bigger bands, with
Moochers Inc headlining this year.
We also have eight free workshops
throughout the day, he said.
The festival was a chance for
people to enjoy themselves, but also
to pick up new ideas about living
sustainably, Mr Lungu said.
We have workshops for
beekeeping, natural house-building,
making olive oil, beer, cheese and
yoghurt, he said.
A $2 donation paves the way to a
bounty of local produce and plenty of
atmosphere by the lake.
Head to the festival from 2pm --
6pm at the Canberra Environment
Centre in Acton, (next to the
National Museum of Australia).
