KILIMANJARO FOR CANCER
Epic trek has special meaning
Rachel Livingston on her
wedding day with her late
Ainslie resident Rachel
Livingston's goal for 2015 is to
climb Mount Kilimanjaro -- the
planet's highest free-standing
Reaching the ascent will be
an incredible feat but, more
than a gutsy challenge, each
step will be a means for Rachel
to honour her late father, John.
He died last March after
being diagnosed with a stage
four gall bladder cancer.
The 68-year-old lived just 12
weeks after his initial
"His cancer was so
aggressive and had spread so
quickly," Rachel said.
"Having such a rare form of
cancer dad had no options for
treatment and spent his final
weeks knowing that there was
no chance for a cure."
Rocked by her father's rapid
decline, Rachel is set on raising
more research funding so
others stand a better chance.
She said through her loss,
she learnt gastro-intestinal
cancers were the most common
form of cancer, affecting
23,000 Australians each year
and claiming 29 lives each day.
"Although dad died
relatively young it does give us
some comfort that he was able
see both my sister and I
marry," she said.
"He sadly passed away just
two weeks before the birth of
his first grandson, Antonio,
and I always think about how
much he'll miss."
Rachel will fly to Tanzania
in November to join a group
from the GI Cancer Institute
and prepare for the gruelling
seven-day trek to conquer the
5895 metre summit.
"The training has begun
already," she said. "I'm
joining a local bushwalking
group to get prepared.
"Dad's death has motivated
me to seize the day and make
the best of my health, but it's
also a chance to raise
awareness and funds for
research and help to improve
the chances of early diagnosis
and treatment for others."
