Canberra six-piece Moochers Inc fuse impressive sounds and old school style as part of their performances.
New Orleans jazz, with atmosphere
Old world charm is not lost on
Canberra six-piece Moochers Inc.
Along with their own brand of
1920s New Orleans-inspired jazz, the
group have an impressive, dapper
Guitarist Rafe Morris said it was
important the band hit the right notes
with both their style and sound.
"Putting in the extra effort to look
like the people that created this style of
music originally adds to the fun," he
said. "It sort of transports the audience
and makes for more of a show."
The group will launch their debut
EP Standing in Front of a House at a
free gig on Saturday in front of the
rotunda at Glebe Park.
"We're hoping people will come
down with drinks and their picnics,"
Morris said. "Guerrilla coffee cart Sly
Fox will also be there."
Recorded at Queanbeyan recording
studios Infidel by Duncan Lowe, the
album features six original, toe-
"There's straight trad jazz and a bit
of swing," he said. "Lyrically it ranges
from pot-smoking grandmas, to lost
love and lamenting old age." The
band's trumpet player, Cameron
Smith, said a party in the park was a
fitting way to celebrate the release.
There should be a really good
vibe,'' he said. It will be fun to see
people with parasols and vintage gear
picnicking in front of the rotunda.''
Since laying down the album in
August 2013, Morris said the group
had created enough new material for
their next record.
While recording was a great
process, he said the group had always
prioritised performing live and are
thrilled to be part of the strong ACT
contingent at this year's Woodford
Folk Festival in Queensland.
Moochers Inc will join with old-
school jug band Mic Conway and the
National Junk Band while there for an
unmissable afternoon of music.
"We have played a lot of festivals
and gigs in the region but this will be
a first for Moochers Inc," he said.
"Woodford is an incredible festival
with an amazing line-up and we're
stoked to be playing there."
