Council withdraws controversial bills
Councillor Jamie Cregan to be
reimbursed for $13,200 he spent on
independent legal advice.
Queanbeyan City Council put an end to
the town s backdated rates debacle and
formally withdrew $3.7 million in rates
bills issued to about 800 ratepayers in
Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall put
forward a motion noting the advice
provided by SC John Robson found the
charges were invalidly levelled -- being
not in strict compliance with the [Local
Councillor Kenrick Winchester was
among several councillors to commend
Councillor Jamie Cregan during the
debate for seeking independent legal

Cregan sought and paid for out of his
own pocket we wouldn t be in this
situation where we are resolving the
rates issue, he said.
Councillors supported Cr
Winchester s motion to reimburse
Cr Cregan for the $13,200 spent
on legal advice. Resolution has come as
a great relief, particularly for the
But business owner Darren Bailey
said in his presentation to the council
that the rates saga had proved too much
and he was forced to sell up.
I have no faith in Queanbeyan any
more as an investment, he said.
The Queanbeyan Residents and
Ratepayers Association vice president
Lisa Robinson said the withdrawal of
the bills was a relief, but has called for
a full inquiry to investigate how the
notices were invalidly levied, to prevent
the issue from happening again.
