Duo prepare to challenge themselves
Two Canberra residents are preparing to
clamber up 21 peaks across the ACT in school
uniforms for a good cause.
Girl Guides Australia members Anna Cook
and Chrissie Erickson planned the adventure to
raise money to girls education in west Africa.
The initiative is part of the Do It In A Dress
campaign by charity group One Girl.
"We ve gone for the 21 peaks that are
accessible for us to climb in the timeframe that
we have, Ms Erickson said. These will include
Mt Ainslie, Black Mountain, Mt Franklin and
Mt Stromlo over four weekends.
Ms Erickson said she wasn t concerned about
the the challenge s physical demands. "I think
the difficulty will come from us using most of
our free time to climb hills, she said. But it
is worth it ... girls education is something I m
very passionate about.
Although the pair settled on 21 peaks, there
is scope to do more.
"It all depends on the time it takes to do
them, Ms Cook said. Together they will drive
to the base of each peak, or as close as possible,
Their aim is to raise $3000. Details:
Future of Aranda Shops looks brighter
After decades in decline the Aranda Shops
could be set for a dramatic comeback.
Site owners and a Canberra coffee business
have been in discussion with residents about
reopening the old shops.
An Aranda Shops Twitter account has even
started. One tweet from @Aranda Shops states,
"I m in the midst of a comeback! Yeeha!"
Belconnen Community Council chair Robyn
Coghlan posted details of plans revealed to the
Aranda Residents Group last week. "The plan
is to turn the site into a farmers market with
high-end coffee shop and restaurant, Ms
Coghlan said. "The existing building will be
used and the coffee shop is due to open in
Aranda Shops owner Gabriel Gaha wanted to
finalise plans with businesses before making an
announcement. It is a dramatic turnaround for
the derelict site which had its lease threatened
12 months ago.
